YOUTH WORK – Making a sustainable difference to the future of the young people

We take a holistic approach to tackling food poverty, obesity and social inequalities. Issues which currently affect three million young people from “disadvantaged” backgrounds in the UK.

Our youth work is about making a sustainable difference to the lives of these young people.

Our mantra is to meet young people ‘where they are at’, in all respects – taking good food to youth centres, youth hostels, community centres and schools. Our team is made of professional chefs who use food as a way to improve health and wellbeing, combat feelings of social isolation, and enhance employability prospects.

Our courses focus on the fundamentals of cooking, the nutritional knowledge and practical skills necessary to develop healthy lifestyle habits in the face of current food and health inequality. Get in touch to find out how we can work with you.

“Firstly, it’s a great opportunity for young people who can’t afford to have a proper dinner at home or in the hostel. Secondly, it helps us learn how to cook and makes us feel confident about it. There is no ‘I can’t cook’ because with the right directions you can do it! Also, cookery class gives us a chance to try different flavours.

Lastly, the most important part; we are all different, have different stories and some of us come from different countries but with the cookery class, there is no difference. We are the same. We cook, we chat and we eat together. It makes me feel like I am with my family.”

I would like to say thank you so much for the wonderful Eat Club sessions. The last 6 weeks with the primary group have been amazing. The leader Liam was fantastic. He really got the young people so involved. I was impressed with how many different dishes, sides dishes and desserts they made. They would make 3-4 different things in about an hour a half. I loved that Liam was ambitious and believed in the young peoples’ capabilities. The young people were keen to take part each week and were great at trying everything they had made. For many of the dishes the young people would say the food was yummy. Liam was great with the young people. He was very patient, calm yet super engaging. The young people worked well with him. His timings were great and I really felt like he understood the young people well.

“Eat Club is a very cool way of interacting with other young people who share similar interests and also a fun way of testing out certain skills. David has a calm approach towards us and is friendly to talk to, never judges you for making a mistake and is fun to be around. Overall Eat Club is brilliant.”

“Copenhagen Youth Project (CYP) have worked in partnership with Eat Club for over two years completing some innovative, exciting, educational and progressive programmes.

These programmes have engaged children and young people aged from 7 to 25 with positive outcomes enabling real change in their lives.

Through the Eat Club programme an industrious, safe and warm environment has been developed which in turn has supported children young people to experience new opportunities, be creative and grow positively using food preparation, cooking and eating as the vehicle.

Eat Club has provided education around food, nutrition and healthier life styles and has also provided knowledge and information on catering and the food industry, skills in planning, preparing and cooking food.

Moreover, hidden behind these more obvious outcomes we have observed children and young people improve their team working skills, communication skills, listening skills, responsiveness, resilience and responsibility. The Eat Club programme has been delivered by a friendly, hardworking and interactive team who have been flexible in their approach resulting in a positive experience and progressive outcomes for all children and young people who participated.”

I think it’s safe to say we love Eat Club. Abigail and Toni have been amazing. Last week they did something special for one of the girls birthdays. It’s been a great partnership.
